My Story: Why I Decided to Become a Graphic Designer

Behind the Scenes

Since I just started my blog, I thought it would be fitting to show a little “behind the scenes” of Amarie Lael Design, and tell the story of why I even decided to start my own brand and web design studio.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have had a deep passion for creating. Now, instead of holding a crayon in my hand, I’m holding my laptop and designing on a screen.  My parents played a huge role in pushing me to become a designer. They bought me a Wacom tablet for my birthday one year in middle school along with a subscription to Adobe Illustrator, and that’s when I first discovered my love for graphic design. My parents even paid me to create some e-cards for their business. Here’s a few examples so you can laugh with me at little Amarie’s designs from middle school. You gotta love those neon colors😉

After high school, I decided to study graphic design and painting. I chose both because I have such a deep passion for creating and painting gives me an outlet to explore my own thoughts and creations, without the final product being determined by my client’s needs.

Painting is the art form that I do for myself and is an expression of my heart, while graphic design is the way that I can use my art to help further other people’s dreams/business/company. I truly love both, and that’s why I decided to study both in college.

So why did I decide to go the route of starting my own business instead of working for a firm? That’s a great question, and one that I actually have to take a moment to think about. For as long as I can remember, I knew I wanted to work for myself from home.

For one, I’m alwaaaaays late — I start off a job great, showing up promptly, but as time goes on, I show up later and later and later. And since I work at home for myself, I never have to worry about being late😂

Besides that, I’m an entrepreneur at heart and I’m passionate about the intention and work that goes into running my own business. My parents are entrepreneurs and seeing them run their own company has always inspired me to do the same.

I get so excited when I think about setting up processes to automate my clients’ experiences, coming up with marketing plans, or all the things (besides taxes, bleh😝) that go into running a business.

What excites me most about my business is that I get to help other business owners and creative entrepreneurs like me take a big step in accomplishing their dreams.

I know how much thought and energy goes into a business — it’s sometimes all I can do to not think/talk about my business ALL the time (just ask my husband). My business is an extension of myself, and I love diving into the research and strategy in order to translate the vision people have for their business into a brand and a design that they’re proud to call their own.

Brand and web design are my passion and focus because they are the building blocks of a business. A brand is the personality and voice that connects a business with their ideal clients. A website is the structure of the business — the final destination that guides potential clients into becoming paying customers/clients.

I love having the flexibility to dream big and come up with designs and strategies that take a business to the next level. I get to help business owners and creatives take big steps in pursuing their dreams, and that’s what gets me more excited than anything!

I'm Amarie (a-muh-ree), the artist and designer behind the business. I am passionate about the color orange, plants, gin & tonics, baby animals, and anything and everything that has to do with art.

With a degree in painting and graphic design, I am truly an artist and illustrator at heart. For every brand created, I aim to incorporate that artistic touch that goes deeper than visuals—it communicates the heart and story behind your business.
